Books
I spent five years writing books for Lonely Planet Publications in Melbourne, Australia, and took half of 1992 to write The Visitor's Guide To The New St Petersburg, the first English-language guide to the city after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
HotSpots Orlando
I updated Hotspots Orlando from Thomas Cook Publishing (packaged by Bridgewater Book Company) in 2006. The guide, in the words of the publisher, "Outlines the favourite destination for fun seekers, the home of theme parks and a Mecca for British tourists. The highlights include summaries of the seven major theme... [Read About This Title]

St Petersburg
The amazing city of St Petersburg has yet again changed beyond belief. The restaurants are on European levels - as are the prices - the streets are clean, the people well dressed and the nightclubs and entertainment scenes are thriving. The thing I liked best about this update was that instead... [Read About This Title]

Europe On A Shoestring
It's shameless, I know, to take credit for this as a title, but my name's on the thing so I've stuck it on my Résumé - here we go: Europe on a Shoestring, the head-to-head competition for Let's Go, contains a four page section on St Petersburg, which I contributed... [Read About This Title]

Brazil
What a blast. I covered the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, as well as updating the history, flora and fauna, and all that stuff in the front of the book, while Andrew, Chris, Robyn and Leo tackled the rest of the country. [Read About This Title]

The Visitor's Guide To The New St Petersburg
This little typo-filled guide was probably the hardest thing I've ever written, and it rocks. Written without sentimentality or fear of reprisals, the book slashed and burned through the tourist nightmare of post-Soviet St Petersburg - the first of its kind. Writers from The Rough Guide and the US Department of... [Read About This Title]

Florida
Tackling the entire state of Florida with your wife is a great way to test the strength of a marriage, and Corinna and I had not just one but two books - this and Lonely Planet's Miami - to do! We managed not only to stay married, but to produce one... [Read About This Title]

Germany
I co-wrote this monster of a guide along with Andrea Schulte-Peevers, Steve Fallon and Anthony Haywood. I covered Bavaria, the ever-lovely Mecklenberg-Vorpommern, half of Lower Saxony (maybe the bigger half), half of Baden-Wurttemburg (the smaller one), Saxony and Saxon Anhalt. And while Steve covered Berlin, I wrote the Trabant joke. All told, probably... [Read About This Title]

Miami
With heaps of help from friends in town, this book is packed with unknown restaurants, serene hotels and some really excellent bargains. This second edition promises to be an even better seller than the first, with full color throughout, heaps of new photographs and new restaurants, and, of course, the latest... Russia, Ukraine & Belarus
This was my first book for Lonely Planet. I wrote it under the expert eye of coordinating author John Noble, along with Andrew Humphreys, Richard Nebesky, and George Wesely. I covered much of European Russia for the book, minus Moscow and the Golden Ring (though I did update the Moscow chapter... [Read About This Title]

Scandinavian & Baltic Europe
One of the coolest ideas Lonely Planet has had in the last few years was adding St Petersburg to its Scandinavian Europe guides. I don't do much on this book, just contribute a 17-page St Petersburg city chapter, but it really rounded the thing out. Or so they say. In... [Read About This Title]

Texas
I turned down the Texas book three times (imagine how badly a freelancer would have not wanted to do a book to turn it down even twice!) before a wonderful couple came to stay with us in Tarifa, Spain; she was from Arlington, and had spent a lot of time... [Read About This Title]

USA
The Lonely Planet guide to the entire USA has been over 25 years in the making, and coordinating author James Lyon managed somehow to handle submissions from about 25 or 50 or 100 of us and wrangle them into a book as heavy as a brick. For this book I worked... [Read About This Title]
