After I began to get comfortable in Linux and HTML, I realized that the best way to practice was to bloviate about my experience in a website. This turned into a fairly lucrative second career, and ended up laying the foundations for my work with Flyguides. These days, as you're seeing right now, nickselby.com still serves as a bloviation platform and work showcase.

Devoted to general aviation pilots and their families, flyguides.com presents information on airports around the United States. Even more interesting than the airports, however, are the thousands of nearby destinations and attractions spotlighted by the site. These articles tell the traveller how to find food near an given airport, who has aviation fuel, what motels are within the budget, where to look for entertainment or just for a quiet sunset walk.
The Flyguides web site is in an extremely organic state with changes and additions occuring weekly. Great care and forethought was put into the backend design with the objective of creating a modular, extensible system that would hold up well to this expected environment of ongoing growth. Working with programmer Darrell King at The Web Center and a team of freelance coders, an object-oriented PHP-driven engine was built on top of Darrell's wcSite foundation to meet those demands. It was a huge success. The resulting back-end management system simplified implementation of changes to the point that decisions to make changes usually take far longer than enacting them!
