The BullsIT Awards celebrates the best of the worst in vendor blather, outright tosh and outrageous flackery - from, "As always, let us know if we can offer any relevance to your knowledge base," to, "That is the secret sauce that we have with the actionable information."
BOSTON, MA -- Nick Selby, the Research Director of the Enterprise Security Practice at technology industry analyst firm The 451 Group, has released on his personal blog (http://nickelby.com/bullsit) The 2007 BullsIT Awards - an annotated collection of the ten most outrageous, preposterous and ludicrous claims made by vendors of information security products. Nick Selby's blog is a personal work and does not express the views of The 451 Group.
The blog contains transcribed snippets of conversations with public relations professionals and vendors as well as information about IT security products and industry trends. The claims were made during 2007 by employees or public relations representatives of vendors of information technology (IT) security products.
The statements range from illiterate ("Our company is in a very unique space in being a best of breed provider") to Ziegleresque ("I commit to you to let you know and keep you informed, and the analyst community informed, of this kind of information because this is a key part of our missionary market phase. We're in a missionary market phase right now") to just plain full of tosh ("It's a single, interoperable, scalable, extensive security framework that protects the data today and tomorrow as the infrastructure changes").
It's stuff that even the dancing paperclip would have flagged as egregious.
The list is annotated with fun facts, parsing of some of the more curious or twisted statements, and comes complete with links to entries in the nickselby.com blog from throughout 2007.
As a special bonus, an eleventh quote - from none other than presidential flack Peggy "Read My Lips" Noonan - is included, in which Ms Noonan suggests removing all detail from the State of the Union address and replacing it with high level thematic flackery. Priceless!
